Preventative Care
Bacteria in your mouth forms a sticky film (plaque) on teeth and gums. If not removed, this film hardens into a crust (tartar or calculus). A buildup of plaque and tartar can cause an infection called periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can lead to pain, gum damage, bone loss or even the eventual loss of your teeth.

In a healthy mouth gums are firm and pink. Firm healthy gums protect teeth and bone. Infected gums bleed, swell and recede (pull away) from teeth. Teeth may loosen and become sensitive. As the infection worsens, bone is lost and teeth may begin falling out.

Periodontal Therapy
In order to effectively treat periodontal disease the Dentist will determine how advanced your periodontal disease is. A full mouth set of x-rays will be taken to determine the amount of bone loss. Periodontal charting will be done. This is a series of six measurements per tooth that indicates the degree of periodontal disease.

Scaling and root planing is a special type of cleaning done by a dental professional. This is usually done on more than one visit and does require anesthesia. This procedure removes plaque and bacteria below the gum line. Once the bacteria and tartar is removed, the gum tissue can then reattach at a healthy level. Home care is of the utmost importance. Our hygienist will instruct you in how to maintain your healthy teeth and gums for life.

Missing teeth can have a major impact on appearance, ability to chew and shifting of remaining teeth. It is extremely important that missing teeth be replaced to ensure the long-term health and stability of not only the surrounding bone, but also the remaining teeth.

Implants
Dental implants generally consist of two major parts: an artificial tooth or teeth and an underlying permanent anchor to which the teeth are attached. The anchor is surgically placed within the jawbone. After about a 3-month healing process, the artificial teeth are attached to the anchor. The artificial teeth fit right onto the gum line for a natural appearance.

The ideal candidate for implants must have healthy gums and sufficient underlying bone. In addition, the patient should be in good general health. Careful assessment by the dentist is needed to determine whether or not dental implants are the best option for the patient.

Fixed Bridgework
Another method of replacing a missing tooth or teeth is fixed bridgework. The procedure involves the abutment teeth, or the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth. Dental restorations are fabricated for the abutment teeth and the missing tooth or "pontic" is soldered to the abutments to create a "bridge". The final bridge will match your other teeth and will bring your mouth back to proper function.

Removable Dentures and Partials
Can be used to replace multiple missing teeth. Dentures and partials are removable.
